Smooth water-based personal lubricant 101: Why, when and how to use

Introducing Smooth, a clean water-based personal lubricant that enhances the ease and comfort of intimate activity to increase pleasure during intimate moments.

Like the rest of the Bloomi Essentials, it is formulated with natural ingredients. We’re breaking down why, when and how using a water-based personal lubricant can elevate your intimate sessions.

Water-based lubricants vs. oil-based lubricants

All lubricants are not made the same. With water-based lubes, the main ingredient is water, which helps to create a formula that is typically lightweight in texture and mimics the body’s natural lubrication. A water-based lubricant can also be used with latex and polyisoprene condoms, dental dams and diaphragms, may safely be enjoyed with sex toys, and can often be used for both penetrative and oral sex, depending on the ingredients included. Some people also prefer water-based lubes because they're less likely to leave stains on clothing or bedding.

Meanwhile, oil-based lubricants have a thicker texture that provides more moisture and ease. However, oil-based lubes aren't compatible with latex or polyisoprene condoms and aren't safe to use with toys. Still, some people find oil-based lubes best for anal sex as well as shower sex, because it is water-proof. It’s important to note that while oil-based lubes can be used during oral sex, they are more prone to staining clothing or bedding.

Ingredients and benefits

Our community asked for a water-based lubricant that can be used on vulvas and penises, so we formulated Smooth. Based on sexologist-approved research, Smooth’s plant-powered formula is made with a beautiful blend of ingredients that were carefully selected to moisturize all genitals.

  • Organic sunflower seed extract hydrates the skin.

  • Green tea extract also hydrates the skin.

  • Guar gum (green bean) helps thicken the formula for even more moisture.

  • Sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) locks in moisture to relieve dryness.

Unlike most intimate care products on the market, we give you our clean promise. Every product from our Bloomi collection is formulated with botanicals from our Yes List and without parabens, phthalates, glycerin, dyes, synthetic fragrances or ingredients that disrupt intimate skin.

Smooth Water-Based Personal Lubricant

Enhance the ease and comfort of intimate activity and supplement the body's natural lubrication.

Why

Water-based lubricants are known to have some of the worst preservatives in intimate care products, so we wanted a simple, good-feeling water-based lubricant with minimal ingredients that isn’t sticky or leaves dried residue. Smooth accomplishes this with water, natural plant thickeners and extracts that provide added hydration and moisture to the skin.

When

Reaching for a water-based lubricant is great for those who are looking for a nice slip during intimate moments. You can use Smooth anytime you want, but most people prefer to use it on intimate skin during sex to increase moisture and ease the comfort of intimate activity like penetration or masturbation. Smooth is worth a try if you relate to any of the following:

  • You experience pain or discomfort during sex due to vaginal dryness, menopause, penetration or hormone changes.

  • You are using a barrier method, like latex and polyisoprene condoms, dental dams and diaphragm.

  • You are using a medical-grade silicone toy like Indulge or Massage.

  • You enjoy using fragrance-free products during oral sex.

How

The first step before using any product on your intimate areas is to test it on a patch of skin to avoid potential intimate skin reactions. Smooth is intended for penile and/or vaginal application to enhance the body’s natural lubrication. Apply and reapply as much as you’d like topically to intimate skin and surrounding areas, such as the clitoris, vulva or penis during intimate activity. Note: This formula is designed for external and internal use.
