What to do before using a new intimate care product
With so much interest in self-care, more people are building intimate care routines — and we love to see it. However, there are some things to know before trying new intimacy products.
Bloomi Essentials is a clean and affordable collection of intimate skin products for all bodies that supports health without causing harm to intimate areas. We use natural aphrodisiacs and vegan ingredients to formulate products that pass the Bloomi Clean Standard, are safe for intimate skin, and feel really nice.
Still, there are a few steps that everyone should take before using a new intimate care product, even a clean one. If you’re interested in building an intimate care routine or introducing a new item to your collection, keep reading.
Patch-test the product
Before starting a new intimate care product, be sure to patch test the item by applying a small amount of the formula to a less-sensitive part of your skin, like your arm, to see if there are any reactions. This is important to do even if the product uses clean, natural ingredients. Oftentimes, we have allergies that we are unaware of, including to plants or seeds that may be in all-natural products.
To perform a patch test, apply the product to a quarter-sized patch of skin on an area that you won't accidentally rub away, like the inside of your arm or elbow. Be sure to apply the same amount of product that you would use on your intimate area and keep it on for as long as you'd use it normally.
Because some reactions do not happen immediately, try it again in about a week. If your skin doesn't react to the ingredients, it'll likely be safe to use on intimate areas. If it does, wash off the product immediately and keep it away from intimate skin.
Don’t use on freshly shaved or waxed skin
If you just shaved or waxed your intimate area, don’t test out a new intimate care product. After removing hair, your intimate skin becomes more sensitive and may be more susceptible to irritation or ingrown hairs. As a result of this heightened sensitivity, a formula — clean or not — that may not typically inflame the skin could end up causing some irritation.
Introduce one product at a time
It’s also important to introduce one intimate care product at a time. If you bought a new intimate care collection and are excited to try every item (we get it!), try to fight that urge. Your body may react differently to each formula. If one item causes irritation, it would be difficult for you to determine which one is the culprit and should be removed from your routine. You can avoid this by patch-testing one product at a time.
Wash your hands
Finally, wash your hands. From touching doorknobs to keyboards, our hands pick up a lot of bacteria throughout the day. To avoid this bacteria from touching our intimate skin — reminder: intimate skin is extremely permeable — wash your hands before applying any product. To wash, use soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You'll want to avoid any product that includes alcohol, like hand sanitizer, or other harsh chemicals that can irritate intimate skin.
